Monet

Monet is one of America's most respected costume jewelry houses. It began in 1927 as the Monocraft Products Company, founded by brothers Michael and Joseff Chernow in Providence, Rhode Island. They started out making metal monograms for purses before turning to jewelry.


In 1934, the brothers hired French designer Edmond Mario Granville, who came to Monet with a fine jewelry background from Cartier. He remained the company's sole designer until the late 1950s, and under his hand Monet became known for finely crafted pieces with noticeably thicker gold plating than its competitors. The Monet name was officially launched in 1937.


Monet is loved for its classic collar necklaces that lie flat against the neck, chunky gold chains, and rope-texture finishes. Early pieces were marked Monocraft in block letters; later pieces carried metal hang tags reading "Monet Jewelers" or "Monet," and from the early 1940s the name was stamped directly on the piece in block letters.
